Sustainable Spiritual Development: The Parables of Jesus
Sustainable Spiritual Development: The Parables of Jesus Week 1: The Wise and Foolish Builder
Jesus taught about the lifestyle and values of the kingdom of God in parables. A parable is a short, simple story that teaches a moral or religious lesson. Jesus used parables to illustrate spiritual truth using real life situations. Jesus was concluding His “Sermon on the Mount” which was recorded from chapters 5–7 of Matthew. Sitting on a mountainside, he was speaking to large crowds and to His disciples. This lengthy message communicated principles of personal lifestyle behaviors such as granting forgiveness, loving your neighbors and enemies, praying, seeking God’s righteousness, etc. As He brings His sermon to a close, He tells a story… Matthew 7:24-27: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
